Martin Robert Curl, Sr. - 409 Upper Road

3rd cousin 2x removed

Martin Curl was born 30 Apr 1879 in Jesenov Vrt house 8, the 6th of 7 living children to Mathias Zurl and Maria Gotenc.  Many of Martins siblings, nieces and nephews immigrated to the United States prior to WWI.  Martin himself came over 5 Nov 1905 with his brother Joseph and briefly lived with their other brother Anton Curl on 1146 Ohio Street in Allegheny City.

Sometime between 1905 and 1910, Martin moved to Beadling where he worked as a coal miner for the Pittsburgh Coal Company.  According to the 1910 Census dated April 1910, Martin has been married for 2 months to Maria Beljan and is living on Beadling Rd.  Their nationalities are incorrectly written as Austrian-Slovak.  His new wife Maria was born 5 Mar 1882 in Fara.  She traveled alone, with the destination of her cousin Anton Kolar in Beadling.

While Martin and Maria met and married in the Pittsburgh area, they were originally from the same parish in Slovenia.  This area of Slovenia is very remote and most inhabitants have been related to each other for many generations.  Hopefully, I will be able to find Maria Beljan's lineage.  I am likely also related to her.

Beginning in 1910, Martin and Maria started in earnest building their family.  They had 5 children in 10 years.

Louis Walter Curl b. 4 Aug 1911 in Beadling
Maria Anna Curl b. 15 Jul 1913 in Beadling
Martin Robert Curl, Jr. b. 2 Apr 1916 in Beadling
Albina Frances Curl (living)
Anna E Curl b. 19 Nov 1921 in Beadling

Between 1910-1940 Martin became a naturalized citizen, registered for both WWI and WWII draft and purchased a home on Upper Road in Beadling.  He was the neighbor of my cousin Lawrence Hofrichter.  While his house is no longer standing, it was cliffhanger on a narrow road, but had a fabulous view of Mount Lebanon, being on top of the mountain.  Martin's son Martin also lived at 605 Upper Road next door to my other cousins, the Delach, Cetinski, May and Arbes families.  Yes, I am related to almost the entire street!  Seems like Kostel all over again.   Martin Sr. House: 409 Upper Road belongs in this section of the street

After the local mines closed in Beadling, Martin worked as a Landscaper.

In 1957, at the age of 75, Martins wife Maria Beljan passed away.  No one knew at that time the names of her parents and while her obituary lists her children, it does not mention her personal history.  Martin Curl passed away almost 9 years later in 1966 in the home of his daughter Albina Stritzl who was living in 130 Grant Ave, near Martins brothers in the Sharpsburg area of Pittsburgh. They are buried in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, abt 3 miles down the road on the border of Upper St. Clair and Peters Townships.
